Term of Hire
Deposit Upon Confirmation of Booking All confirmed booking must be secured by a deposit via a credit card or bank transfer. no booking will be confirmed without a deposit. Deposit will be determined by the length of rental. Driver Age/ Driving License The hire must be between 23 years of age and 70 years of age. The hirer must present a valid driving licence recognized by any authority. An international driving licence is not a must. Also one must have valid identification document. All Kenyans and East Africans wishing to hire cars must produce further proof of identification. The officer in charge of a location has the right to decline one car hire if he feels the safety of the car is not guaranteed. Such refusal is not subject of review by any other employee of the company or owners. Chauffeur driven Services/ Car hire with driver We do offer Chauffeur driven services between Nairobi and Mombasa. Being tour drivers, they do not usually observe the 8:00 to 17:00 Hrs work schedule. Work for our drivers is usually assignment driven. As the hirer you are expected to issue reasonable instructions to the driver. The driver is at your disposal. However an overworked driver is likely to cause accidents. Driving Code In Kenya we keep left. The hirer or his official driver is expected to observe all traffic rules. At all junctions and round about, give way to people coming from your right. Pay all parking fees and any fines as a result of speeding. Driving along Mombasa road can be dangerous. That road is “owned” by the trailers. Give way to them all the time irrespective of your right of way. Avoid driving under influence. If you must drink and drive, drink water or milk.
Highway requirements: For car rental or hire in Kenya, like other countries the police checks can ruin your trip. To avoid complications with the Kenya police, make sure that the car rental company or individual has the necessary papers for the car. These include Current insurance certificate. Though receiving this message from our guest inspired me to write, I discovered that I had few choices for words to describe this adventure. Thrilling, challenging, beautiful, hard, soft, inspiring all flooded into my brains. I have to admit that the only way you can truly appreciate Rutundu log Cabins is by visiting. Rutundu Log log Cabins and the adjacent lakes Rutundu and Alice enjoy a remote location in the middle of Mt Kenya National Park. It a secluded, absolute escape for lovebirds, away from civilization and from it all. Rutundu gained international fame as the place where Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge proposed to the future Queen Kate Middleton.

The morning of Jul 27th 2011 was a chilly. Though it had not rained the previous days, it was threatening to drizzle and I and our tour guide Kirimi were wondering whether we will make it to pick our guests. On a rainy day, it is a bit tricky to get to Rutundu even with a 4×4. You have to contend with sticky soils of Marania and Muchiene areas, not to forget that elephants can fell trees and block your route. To unblock the road can take the better part of the day.
From Meru we drove to Kiirua and branched to Kibirichia. We drove past Kibirichia, Muchiene and entered Marania forest. This is where we found elephants had felled one tree blocking the road. Our help came from the un expected arrival of motor cycle riders who cleared the road and we passed on. Driving up the road we came across a stone signposted Rutundu Log Cabins. From this sign post you have undisturbed views of Ithangune hill, Lake Alice, the valleys below and the mountain peaks. By the time we arrived in the moorlands, the sun was up and the day crystal clear and we were able to take some photographs.
Actually the signpost marks the end of forest and entry into the moorlands. From here you drive for about two hours to Kathita gorge where your luggage is loaded into the cable cars for crossing. All guests are advised to walk across the stream. From the gorge, it takes about 30 minutes to walk to the Cabins.
The drive from the signpost to the cabins takes you via the most scenic route with clear views of the Mt peaks and the surrounding area. You are likely to sport zebras, buffaloes or elephants within the forests or the moorlands. Colourful flowery plants grace the moorlands.
On arrival at the Gorge, with assistance of the cabin staff, our guests had already crossed and were waiting for us. We loaded their Luggage into the car, offered lift to one of the staff and drove back to Meru.

Constructed from stone, local timber and thatch, the lodge is perched high on the edge of the plateau looking south towards Mount Kenya. The House is truly exclusive, self-contained private house built on the edge of the escarpment entirely from local stone and thatch. The location and architecture of the house are breathtaking, as are the furnishings, most of which have been designed and made at Loisaba.

A unique attraction at Loisaba are the star beds, where guests have an opportunity to sleep under the stars. Two sets of Star Beds at Loisaba. Kiboko Star Beds are located on top of a kopje overlooking the “Kiboko” waterhole. Koija Star Beds are located about 8 Kilometres further on the banks of the Ewaso N’giro River.
“Koija” Star Beds and are a new joint venture undertaken in partnership of Loisaba and Laikipiak Maasai people from the Koija community.
Each Star Bed is set on an intricately designed, handcrafted wooden raised platform, and partially covered with a thatched roof. Homemade “Mukokoteni Beds” (uniquely designed bed on wheels), can either be wheeled onto the open deck area for a night under the stars, or left under the shelter of the roof.All the beds have complete “four-poster” insect netting. The Star Beds are normally reached by one of many options; on foot, horse, camel or vehicle and with two sets now in place create a unique opportunity to travel between them both and the lodge as part of a Star Bed Expedition.
Guests are guided and hosted by a team of traditional Samburu and Laikipiak Maasai warriors. Food is prepared in traditional camp kitchen, Barbeque style.Both the Kiboko and Koija Star Beds comprise of 2 double sleeping platforms and one twin platform. Each double platform is designed for 1 or 2 people. The family platform accommodates 4 people (sharing bathroom facilities). Each platform is en-suite and has a large camp-style shower. Accommodation at Muktan comprises of three traditional huts made of the local material, perched at the edge of the gorge. Each of the huts is luxuriously furnished in Lamu and Swahili furniture. Each hut has a double bed, spacious bathroom, fire place and private verandah overlooking the cliffs. The central lounge and the dinning are furnished with rare antiques.
To enhance the quietness, no generators are provided at Mukutan Retreat. Power is provided by solar panels and most of lighting by candles.
