Nairobi  Car Hire  And  Rental Company provides self drive services through out Kenya and the rest of East Africa.  Self drive car hire  is ultimate flexibility, and fun in your own privacy.  Self drive means lots of freedom and choice. Self drive safari can be guided or totally private.  Guided self drive means that you have a private guide as who doubles up as a driver.  Alternatively you can drive and the guide will advice you on places of visit.  Unlike in group tours where programmes are fixed, self drive car hire gives lots of lee way.  You can trim some part of the tour, you can skip a scheduled visit. You decide wNairobi car hire, car rental 4x4wd, car hire services nairobi kenya, car hire services, self drive nairobi jomo kenyatta airporthen to wake up, start your journey and where to visit.  Whether to use a guide or not boils down to certain factors.

The Most Important of these is your familiarity with the car and destination.  An understanding of how a car works means that you do your daily driver’s checks without fail.  You daily check your car fluid levels- water, oil, tft and transmission fluids and physical examination of tyre pressure, lights etc.  Making sure that these are in order will determine whether you breakdown in the middle of nowhere or not.  More so , you should be familiar with car electrical-wiring.  Nothing is more embarrassing than calling for help only to discover that the fault is caused by loose battery terminals. Night driving require that you check your headlights are in working order all the time. Unlike conventional cars, 4x4s require additional driving knowledge.  When to and how to drive when you 4×4 is engaged in very important. If you have limited car experience, have a guide otherwise you will end up breaking your car or worse still a rental car and paying heavily. Broken cars also means waste of time.

Self driving means being familiar with the destination.  It means you can communicate in  the language at the destination. It means you know when the attractions are open or when closed.  It means you know places of accommodation, whether they are available, open or closed. IF YOU WILL VISIT NATIONAL PARKS, BE familiar with RULES, REGULATIONS AND ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR.  Otherwise you will end up being killed or injured by an irate wild animal.  Buffaloes, elephant and hippos are extremely dangerous.

Photographic Safaris: Self drive photographic safaris means a car that is neither tool high now too low.  That means sedan cars or high tour buses and tracks will not give you good photo exposures.   Settle for a 4×4 or microbus.

SELF DIVE,  means you are over 23 year of age and less than 65, in possession of valid driving license and papers of identification. You may also be required to produce a credit card or pay refundable USD 500 in addition to the rental amount. However age limit is subject to waiver depending on certain conditions.

Our selection of SELF DRIVE rental cars in Nairobi Kenya is wide with hire vehicles including the latest of SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) also called Off-road cars  like Toyota Rav4, Toyota Land Cruiser ,Pajero i/o, Honda CRV , Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan X trail, Hilux double cabin pick ups and full size 4×4 Safari Landcruisers, Land rovers and Safari minivans vans.

Meru National Park Attractions, Activities, Safaris, What to do

May 2, 2012

Often referred to as a complete wilderness,  Meru National Park is a perfect holiday retreat for wildlife safaris and adventures,  sight seeing, camping and relaxation. Meru National Park is often referred to as the Elsa’s Country.

Meru National Park Attractions, Activities, Safaris, Things to do.

Meru National Park Attractions

The Elsa story is the bait that draws visitors to the park.  It is an adventure fantasy of how two conservationist raised up the lion cabs, weaned them to maturity, the struggle and the suspense that follow as they try to introduce it to the wild.  While Adamson insists that Elsa is a tame domestic cat unlikely to survive in the wild, Joy insists that SHE was born free and must be allowed to live free, hence the name born free and living free.  By and by Joy prevails and the cat is released to the wild where she successfully is integrate into the wild prides and is able to bring up her own cabs.  We can positively argue that her descendants form some of the present day prides in Meru Park.  Upon her death, George buried Elsa in Meru National Park.  Her grave a monument not to be missed by any visitor to the park. Besides the lion cabs, Joy also brought up a cheetah cab named Pipa.  Pipa’s grave is also clearly marked attraction in Meru Park.

The tragic end of the two conservationists was an anti climax of sorts. Joy was murdered in Meru Park and her ashes were scattered within the park.  George was also murdered in Kora National Park is buried there. Adam’s home (Kampi Ya Simba) is an attraction on its own.

Wildlife Nirvana

In the earlier days, Meru was world famous for its large number of wildlife attributed to its agreeable climate.  With 14 permanent rivers, the park is a paradise compared to other parks in the region.  Receiving over 760mm of rainfall, the park is ever green and attracts large numbers of resident animals.  However the intensive poaching of late 70’s and early 80’s completely decimated the park’s herds of elephants, rhinos and other big mammals reducing it to a lifeless shell.  The devastation was so intense that lodges closed down.

Restocking and back to glory

The restocking of Meru NP has earned its place in the history of conservation.  It is the largest big mammal trans location in the human history in terms of intensity, the numbers  involved, the species and more so the size of animals.  It was a day and night affair that saw whole families of elephants were trans located from larger Laikipia region to Meru NP.  Besides elephants, rhinos have been re-introduced. Others translocated to the park were grevy Zebras and reticulated giraffes.

Today you are likely to see all the big five in Meru Park.  Elephants, Buffalos, Rhinos, zebras, giraffe, lions, hippos, reedbucks, hartebeests, gazelles, baboons, impalas.  In the rivers are crocodiles and hippos.  Reptiles are well represented with cobras, pythons.

472 species of bird have been recorded including Somali ostrich, weavers, starlings, mannikins, guinea fowls, rollers,

Another attractions is the beautiful landscape. Mt Kenya is clearly visible from the park.  Also one can go exploring Mt Kilimanjeru.

Things to do in Meru National Park

“Attractions determine what to do in any destination. Meru park  is about exclusivity.  Bird Watching, Picnics, Camping, Wildlife Safaris, Adventure and Cultural safaris can all be organized. Game and bird watching are best undertaken in the morning and evening.  Nature walks, rafting and fishing can be organized along Tana River.  Afternoons are best spent on cultural tours, fishing, rafting or just relaxing at the hotel swimming pools.”

Day break brings relieve to diurnals (day active) for its a privilege to be alive.  At that time you are also likely to see the nocturnal (night actives) going to their dens.  This is the best time to witness hunting.  Night game drives are not available in Meru Park. However these can be enjoyed in nearby private ranch of Sweet Waters.

Bird watching is a big attraction in Meru park. With over 427 species recorded, its a bird watcher’s paradise. Best time to watch is at dawn or at dusk.   Bring your binoculars and field guides.

The former home of the Adamsons-Joy and George and Elsa the lioness is a big crowd puller to the park.  Many visitors also visit the graves of Pipa ( the cheetah) and Elsa.

April 19, 2012

Rhino Poaching on Increase in Kenya’s Laikipia Private Ranches

Earlier, two rhinos had been poached in two separate incidents over the last one week. The first rhino killing occurred about a week ago in Lewa Conservancy in Isiolo County. Lewa Conservancy rangers together with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and police are still investigating the incident.

The second case occurred in Solio Ranch in Laikipia County on Tuesday night April 10, 2012  where a black rhino was killed and the horn taken as well.  A joint KWS and General Service Unit (GSU) security team moved in when gunshots were heard to determine the circumstances of the shooting.

KWS | Three suspected poachers gunned down In Tsavo as Ethiopian Immigrants seized in Amboseli

March 28, 2012

KWS | Three suspected poachers gunned down In Tsavo as Ethiopian Immigrants seized in Amboseli.

Three suspected poachers have been gunned down and four firearms with 81 rounds of ammunition recovered in two separate incidents in the last one week.

In a third unrelated incident, a joint Kenya Wildlife Service and police team seized 95 suspected illegal male immigrants from Ethiopia last night at 2am on the Amboseli Namanga Road. Plans are underway to arraign them before the Kajiadop Court this morning.

The three unidentified suspects, who were on a poaching mission inside the expansive Tsavo East National Park, were shot dead after a shoot-out with Kenya Wildlife Service personnel, yesterday at 4.30 pm.
In this incident, three AK-47 rifles and 80 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

Also recovered were three pieces of ivory. One suspect escaped from the shoot-out with serious injuries. Police from Voi have visited the scene of crime and are continuing with further investigations into the incident.  A follow-up operation is underway.

In another wildlife crime related incident at Ndonyo Wasin in Samburu County, KWS personnel recovered a G3 rifle and one round of ammunition. This was recovered following interrogation of two suspected poachers, including a woman, in police custody.
KWS has strengthened its law enforcement capacity and enhanced collaboration with other security agencies to address poaching. Much of the success attained in apprehending criminals and recovering illegal trophies and firearms is attributed to information provided by the public.
We appreciate this public support and remain committed to relentlessly fighting wildlife crime in all its forms.
