Cars are means of movement from one place to another. Prestige and fashion, keeping up with the Jones are secondary. That said all cars on the road are equal under the law irrespective of the age, size, purpose, make, market prices and social status of the owner or driver. What I am telling you is as a driver you must respect and be courteous to all other drivers. That said I always advice drivers to respect anything that looks bigger than you. 

The number one rule of driving is all drivers are mad except you. Always be 🆒, 🔀give way⬅and maintain defensive driving,  keeping on your lane, correct signaling, observing red lights etc. Always drive on the kerb side and especially on dual carriage way unless you can’t help it. The middle lanes are good for ease of changing lanes but they keep you sandwiched between other drivers especially during pick hour. On the country roads with on coming traffic always drive on the outermost side of the road. Don’t drive on the yellow line. 

Your eyes are the number one equipment you need for driving. Others include your hands, legs and of course your brains. Your senses of smell and hearing come in handy. 

1. Always keep your eyes on the road. Focus ahead. Keep your eyes on the centre, pay attention to both edges of the road and oncoming traffic. Wild animals, domestic animals and even humans rarely announce their presence. In populated areas children emerge from nowhere. Be perfect in the use of mirrors, side and rear mirrors to monitor the traffic behind. Espy the traffic on your sides if driving on the middle lanes. Watch out for cyclists. Motor cyclists appear from nowhere and cut in front of you without warning. To Men drivers keep your eyes off the beautiful skirt wearers walking on the kerbside. 

2. Always keep your hands on the steering wheel. Your hands should always be on the 10 O’clock, 2 O’clock position. Keep off the mobile phone. Don’t text or answer call. Don’t fiddle with the radio, don’t eat or plait hair. Keep your hands off your girlfriend’s thighs. She is of no use dead or maimed. 

3. 📵Switch off📴. You are a driver not a phone operator.  Driving requires 100% concentration. It takes a second to bang into oncoming traffic or a pedestrian. With your hand on the phone you cannot react appropriately in emergencies. To stay a life keep off your mobile phone. In some situations a mobile phone can distract you up to 100% . My advice switch it off. If you must make a call stop, call and switch off. 

3. Keep off alcohol. If you must drink and drive, drink water, milk, soda. Alcohol impairs your judgment and sight. If you are caught driving under influence you are likely to be heavily fined or even jailed if you can’t pay the fine. Once you are drunk look for alternative means of transport. Call a taxi or ask someone else drive you home. 

4. 🔤Observe traffic rules⛔. Traffic rules are there to keep everybody safe. Observing traffic rules ensures smooth driving and predictability. Observe speed limits, red lights, indicate correctly. Don’t run red lights, overlap etc. Keep to your lane. 

5. Do not speed. This apply to everyone including emergency cars. What’s the need of speeding if you won’t reach your destination. Always drive at manageable speeds. 

6. Do not tailgate. Always keep your distance. Tailgating entails following other drivers closely at high speed without overtaking,slowing when they slow down, picking speed when they speed. This is danger even infuriating. Some may mistake you for car jackers, kidnappers or robbers. Always ask yourself what happens if the driver in front apply emergency brakes. Will you stop without crushing onto him? Besides speed may earn you a fine or any appropriate action depending on the law. 

7. Avoid aggressiveness: Some drivers will provoke you no matter how courteous you are. Some will drive fast and cut you off, tailgate you flashing lights and honking. The best dose for such drivers is smile at them and give way. Don’t provoke traffic range. 

8. Always give way: As I said this is rule number one of defensive or safe driving. Give way even when you have right of you. This not only safes life but promotes good makers. 

9. Maintain your car well. A well maintained car stops when and where you want. Carry out routine maintenance. Check oil, ATF, brake fluid and coolant are in appropriate level. 

10. Buckle up. Always wear your safety belt before the car is in motion. Remind all passengers on this simple safety rule.
