Wildebeest Migration
Every year, in the months of July August and September, over 1.7 million wildebeests accompanied by about 800,000 gazelles and Zebras migrate from Serengeti into Maasai (Masai) Mara and back. The river crossings are particularly dangerous as large crocodile lie in wait of unsuspecting animals, killing and maiming thousands of them. Besides predation, migrating herds have to contend with flooded rivers and disease outbreaks. The wildebeest mate in Maasai Mara and Calve in Serengeti.
The annual wildebeest migration is not about wildebeests migrating per se but rather its influence on the movement patterns of the other animals including human beings. Picture a never ending milling of over 2.5 million wild animals composed of a about 1.7 million wildebeests, and 800,000 common gazelles and zebras with predators-lions, hyenas, leopards, jackals etc following closely. In this picture add thousands of vultures providing air cover the to migrating animals, the goggling human traffic; the hazardous crossing of crocodile invested Mara and Grumeti rivers and behold your magical wonder of nature.
Where are the Wildebeest? Maasai (Masai) Mara or Serengeti? The Migration Cycle:-
The migration follows a clockwise direction dictated by the rain patterns in the Mara/Serengeti ecosystem. The Migration has been going on for as long as our ancestors can remember and where it started is debatable. The best times to view migration in Serengeti is December to Jul. While in Maasai Mara, the best time is August to November. Between December and March, the herds congregate in Eastern Serengeti Plains where carving takes place. Births accounts for over half a million calves annually. April and May still in Serengeti the calves matures and gets ready for migration. June is the month of crossing Grumeti River along the Northern Corridor towards Maasai Mara. In July/August, the herds cross the Mara River into Maasai (Masai) Mara, where mating takes place. By November the succulent grass in Mara is finished and the migrating herds heads for Serengeti where curving will take place and the entire cycle starts all over again.

(Isiolo, Kenya) – In the past week, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy suffered the demoralizing loss of four rhinos to poachers. Two male black rhinos and two female black rhinos were slaughtered, bringing the population of rhino on Lewa back down to 71 individuals. In a country where the population is slightly above 600 animals, these incidents are a devastating blow to conservation efforts and show the enormous pressure that these animals are under.
Rhinotek, an 11-year-old female rhino was found dead at mid-day on the 1st of December. The initial assessment did not give a clear indication of the cause of death but further veterinary examination established that the animal died from a bullet wound to the stomach. Nyota, a 20-year-old female and Serian, a seven-year-old male were shot dead at approximately 1:00 am, on the 2nd of December. Another carcass, later on identified as Jazz, a male rhino, was discovered mid-afternoon on the 2nd of December. Three of the rhino horn sets were intact and have since been recovered for safekeeping. The poachers managed to remove the other set of horns.
Many experts highlight that Africa’s rhinos are facing the worst poaching crisis in decades, with the most serious poaching upsurges in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Although population figures for both black and white rhinos have increased since 2007, because of the increase in poaching, there is still grave concern for the rhino’s future. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is not immune to this crisis and has lost 10 rhinos in the last three years.
“These incidents serve as a constant reminder of the harsh reality and rapidly escalating threat faced by rhinos. Lewa is now more than ever determined to counter these threats by increasing our security and monitoring efforts, reinforcing the important contribution that Lewa’s wildlife is making to local communities, and minimizing the risk posed to the remaining rhino population,” Mike Watson, Lewa’s CEO reaffirms the commitment towards rhino conservation, despite this most recent setback.
The critical mass of Lewa is worldwide. It is a famous destination attracting a diversity of guests, the list of which includes no other than Prince William. From Nairobi, you can either fly or drive into Lewa. A fly/drive arrangement is possible. Two road options are available. From Nairobi you can either drive as follows
Whichever road you use, you drive all the way to Isiolo Junction (Subuiga) from where the gate of Lewa is 2 km down Isiolo Road(A2).
Accommodation at Lewa Wildlife conservancy is offered by Lewa House, Lewa Safari Camp, Wilderness Trails, Kifaru House, Sirikoi Camp.
Lewa House consists of the main house and three cottages. It can accommodate in total 12 guests. It has a large swimming pool
Lewa Safari Camp (USD 180 (Low Season)-USD410(High Season pp sharing) provides 12 tents with a swimming pool. The camp offer spectacular views of snow capped Mt Kenya and Laikipia.
