The different parks have similar animals but the highlights are totally different. 

a) Tarangire’s signature attractions are large elephants herds with individual groups of even hundred heads and the impressive stands of weird, ungainly baobab trees. Besides are you aware of Tarangire migration? Though not as impressive, spectacular as the Mara Serengeti migration it’s quite impressive too with 3000 elephants, 25000 wildebeest, 30000 zebras, gazelles, and fringe eared oryx. 

b) Ngorongoro has an impressive animal sighting. The crater is home to 25000 to 30000 big mammals including rare black rhinos, the beautiful scenery, phenomenal photography opportunities and local communities. Cultural visits organized through cultural tourism programs at Karatu. Other attractions include archeological site of Olduvai, Lake Natron and her flamingos, Empakai crater, the active volcano of Oldonyo le Ngai. Lake Natron is a Ramsar site, the breeding ground of lesser flamingos. The lake contains trona, called Sodium bicarbonate (Na3Co3) or washing powder a chemical essential for glass and detergent manufacturing. The lake’s pinkish, reddish coloration (see photo) is attributed to availability of cyanobacteria and other bacteria organism that photosynthesis just like plants.  Give Ngorongoro Crater a day, Lake Natron a day or two, Oldonyo Le Ngai 2 days. 

c) Serengeti’s (http://goo.gl/d8az4k) highlights are annual wildebeest migration and the predator in action phenomenon. Serengeti has the largest concentration of predators, over 10000 of them. 8000 of these are spotted hyenas, lions number 3000. The rest are leopards, cheetah, serval etc. 

The Ndutu area of southern Serengeti /Ngorongoro is best explored in combination of Olduvai gorge. Ndutu highlights include archeological site of Olduvai, the Oldeani gorge, the shifting sands, the Olbalbal depression, Mt Makarot, the Selai Plains. The Oldeani gorge is the world famous breeding ground of Ruppel’s griffon (griffin) vulture. In the cliffs are Lamagyyer vultures, Nyanza swallow, klipspringers too. Oldeani is the best place to see authentic Masai morans. 

d) Lake Manyara National Park. Is famous for its tree climbing lions and the ever green  ground water forest, the hot water springs and prolific birdlife. 
All the parks have over 400 species of birds recorded. So as you can see parks are not all about animals. Each has a history. Though animal species maybe similar the disposition is totally different. Lions in Tarangire may climb trees

Located in Tanzania’s northern tourism circuit, lake Manyara is a lovely scenic gem, a lush green paradise enjoying spectacular settings against the a back-drop of 600 m high rift-valley escarpments. Though receiving less than 800ml of rainfall much of the park is covered by the ever green ground water forest. The ground water forest resembles a rain forest with tall large trees, lianas, struggling fig trees and canopy. The ground ever green forest is home to a variety of wildlife. Primates thriving in the forest include the blue monkeys, baboons and vervet monkey. Forest birds like the silvery-cheecked horn-bills abound. Also found here are the guinea fowls.

Lake Manyara is also a perfect bird watcher’s paradise with 400 species of birds recorded. The star of this afivauna are the large flocks of pink feathered flamingos on the lake shores. The availability of geothermal heated hot-springs makes it possible for the green algae, spiralina (food of flamingos) to thrive. Other wanders (water birds) to be found on the lake shores are pelicans, storks, jacanas, egrets, plovers, ducks and geese. Elephants and other mammals do visit the forest too.

Found in lake Manyara are the tree climbing lions. Tree climbing lions are also to be found in Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Serengeti Parks. In Uganda, will find them in Isasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National park. They climb up the trees to avoid the often painful bite of the tsetse flies.

Other big mammals in the park include buffaloes, zebra, giraffe, impala, waterbucks, klipspringer ( on the cliffs), leopards, warthogs, mongoose.

Another attraction in Lake Manyara is the Mto wa Mbu, a multi-ethnic with lively colourful markets and thriving cultural tourism programmes. The central market is quite impressive with all the local produce including the Masai beads and shukas. The cultural tourism programe includes visits to shambas (Farms). This visits the local farms where you will witness and even participate in making of banana beer (mbege). Other excursions from Mto wa Mbu includes hikes to Lake Miwaleni, Balaa Hill or Njoro hotsprings. Canoeing is also available on the west side of the lake when the water is high.

Activities in Lake Manyara National Park

Getting To Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is approximately 120 Km from Arusha. Give it a 2 hours drive. The park is best visited from June to September. A 4×4 car is recommended.

Day 1. Arusha – Ngorongoro Safari
Distance: 190 km (4 hrs.)
On arrival you will be met by the representatives of and driven to Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area crossing on the way the small villages of Mto Wa Mbu and Karatu with unique views of the high altitude rain forest surrounding the ring. Dinner & overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge/ Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge-B/L/D

Often described as the “Eighth” Wonder of the World, the Ngorongoro crater is so spectacular that it touches all the senses. A volcanic crater of over 259 square kilometres with surrounding walls rising 609 metres above it, the crater is a natural sanctuary for over 25,000 animals, including the black rhino. It is also a conservation area inhabited by the Masai tribe.

Day 2. Ngorongoro Safari full day
Breakfast and departure for a full day of game viewing discovering the beauty and abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor. Picnic lunch. Dinner & overnight at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge/Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, B, L,D.

Day 3. Ngorongoro – Serengeti Safari
Distance: 145 km (3 hrs 30 min.).
After breakfast, depart to Serengeti stopping on the way at Olduvai Gorge , the archaeological site made famous by Louis & Mary Leakey. Lunch and afternoon game drive in the most famous of all the sanctuaries and one of the last great strongholds of wildlife in the world. Day 4. Serengeti Safari full day

Day 5. Serengeti – Lake Manyara Safari
Distance: 205 km (4 hrs.). After breakfast depart to Manyara. Lunch and afternoon game drive in this superb scenic park set around Lake Manyara , most famous for the tree climbing lions. Dinner & overnight at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge B/ L/D.

Day 6. Lake Manyara-Arusha
Distance: 130 km (2 hrs. 30 min.).
Breakfast and return to Arusha to catch your flight to Kigali.

Day7 Kigali City Tour – Kinigi

Breakfast in your hotel is followed by the city tour.  The city tour visits various attractions like the Kandt’s Museum, Kaplaki, Dancing pots and finally the genocide memorial of Gisozi.  Lunch at a city restaurant and drive to Kinigi, the base of gorilla tracking.  This 2Hrs drive takes you through the beautifully terraced hilly countryside of Rwanda to Ruhengeri and further to Kinigi.  Brief stopovers are provided on the way for photography.  Overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/  Kinigi Guest House / Sabyinyo Silverback Community Lodge (B/L/D)

Day8  Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda Volcanoes National Park( Parc des Volcans) 

An early morning breakfast is followed by a drive to Kinigi park headquarters for group, guide allocation and briefing. This is followed by a drive to the trailheads where hiking and trekking up the hills to the bamboo zone begins.  Hiking, trekking and tracking gorillas may take 2-3 hours.  Sight and stay with the Gorillas for one hour. Descend to your hotel for lunch.  In the afternoon visit Lakes Burela and Ruhondo community.  Return to Kinigi in time for dinner. Overnight at  Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/  Kinigi Guest House / Sabyinyo Silverback Community Lodge  (B/L/D) (This tour of Lakes  possible if guests finish tracking  on time at no extra cost).

Day9  Gorilla  Tracking Rwanda Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, drive to Kinigi Park headquarters for  guide, group allocation and briefing.  This is followed by a drive to the trail heads where hiking/ trekking begins.  Gorilla Tracking begins upon sighting of the previous night’s nests.  Stay with the gorillas for an hour and return to the base hotel for lunch. In the afternoon drive to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu.  Overnight Kivu Serena Hotel  (B/L/D)

Day10  Ruhengeri / Gisenyi – Kigali-Home

After breakfast drive to Kigali .  Have a city tour followed by lunch.   In the afternoon transfer to the airport for home flight.
