Located in Tanzania’s northern tourism circuit, lake Manyara is a lovely scenic gem, a lush green paradise enjoying spectacular settings against the a back-drop of 600 m high rift-valley escarpments.    Though receiving less than 800ml of rainfall much of the park is covered by the ever green ground water forest.  The ground water  forest resembles a rain forest with tall large trees, lianas, struggling fig trees and canopy.  The ground ever green forest is home to a variety of wildlife. Primates thriving in the forest include the blue monkeys, baboons and vervet monkey.  Forest birds like the silvery-cheecked horn-bills abound. Also found here are the guinea fowls.

Lake Manyara is also a perfect bird watcher’s paradise with 400 species of birds recorded.  The star of this afivauna are the large flocks of pink feathered flamingos on the lake shores.  The availability of geothermal heated hot-springs makes it possible for the green algae, spiralina (food of flamingos) to thrive. Other wanders (water birds) to be found on the lake shores are pelicans, storks, jacanas, egrets, plovers, ducks and geese. Elephants and other mammals do visit the forest too.

Found in lake Manyara are the tree climbing lions.  Tree climbing lions are also to be found in Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Serengeti Parks.  In Uganda, will find them in Isasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National park. They climb up the trees to avoid the often painful bite of the tsetse flies.

Other big mammals in the park include buffaloes, zebra, giraffe, impala, waterbucks, klipspringer ( on the cliffs), leopards, warthogs, mongoose.

Another attraction in Lake Manyara is the Mto wa Mbu, a multi-ethnic with lively colourful markets and thriving cultural tourism programmes.  The central market is quite impressive with all the local produce including the Masai beads and shukas.  The cultural tourism programe includes visits to shambas (Farms). This visits the local farms where you will witness and even participate in making of banana beer (mbege).  Other excursions from Mto wa Mbu includes hikes to Lake Miwaleni, Balaa Hill or Njoro hotsprings.  Canoeing is also available on the west side of the lake when the water is high.

If you happen to be around on 22 of any month, visit the mnada, the animal auction market which attracts buyers from all over the country.

Activities in Lake Manyara National Park

Besides bird watching and game drives one can enjoy canoeing, mountain biking, micro lifting, night game drives, bush dinners, forest walks, birding. Outside the park one can enjoy the local cultural tourism programs.

Getting To Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is approximately 120 Km from Arusha.  Give it  a 2 hours drive.  The park is best visited from June to September.  A 4×4 car is recommended.

Most of accommodation facilities are outside the park within Mto wa Mbu and the surrounding area. Inside the park accommodation is limited to campsites.

Term of Hire

Deposit Upon Confirmation of Booking

All confirmed booking must be secured by a deposit via a credit card or bank transfer. no booking will be confirmed without a deposit.  Deposit will be determined by the length of rental. 

Driver Age/ Driving License

The hire must be between 23 years of age and 70 years of age.  The hirer must present a valid driving licence recognized by any authority.  An international driving licence is not a must.  Also one must have valid identification document.  All Kenyans and East Africans wishing to hire cars must produce further proof of identification.  The officer in charge of a location has the right to decline one car hire if he feels the safety of the car is not guaranteed. Such refusal is not subject of review by any other employee of the company or owners.

Chauffeur driven Services/ Car hire with driver

We do offer Chauffeur driven services between Nairobi and Mombasa.  Being tour drivers, they do not usually observe the 8:00 to 17:00 Hrs work schedule.  Work for our drivers is usually assignment driven.  As the hirer you are expected to issue reasonable instructions to the driver. The driver is at your disposal. However an overworked driver is likely to cause accidents. 

Driving Code

In Kenya we keep left.  The hirer or his official driver is expected to observe all traffic rules.  At all junctions and round     about, give way to people coming from your right. Pay all parking fees and any fines as a result of speeding. Driving along Mombasa road can be dangerous.  That road is “owned” by the trailers.  Give way to them all the time irrespective of your right of way. Avoid driving under influence.  If you must drink and drive, drink water or milk.

Highway requirements:  

For car rental or hire in Kenya, like other countries the police checks can ruin your trip. To avoid complications with the Kenya police, make sure that the car rental company or individual has the necessary papers for the car.  These include Current insurance certificate.  Car Accessories -spare wheel, jack, fire extinguisher, life saver triangle.  Car Rental to remote Northern Kenya requires extra tyres and tubes at your own expense.

Pick up and drop off points: 

Cars can be picked from Nairobi, Mombasa, Malindi hotel or their respective airport and returned to the same..  Cars can also be picked dropped off  at our Nairobi offices in Nairobi, Mombasa, Malindi or at any other agreed location at the expiry of rental. We do airport transfers from Jomo Kenyatta international airport (Nairobi), Moi International Airport Mombasa to the town centre or any destination. 

Airport transfers between JKIA (Jomo Kenyatta International Airport) to the city hotels will take between 20 and 30minutes depending on the traffic situation and your hotel of destination.

(Isiolo, Kenya) – In the past week, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy suffered the demoralizing loss of four rhinos to poachers. Two male black rhinos and two female black rhinos were slaughtered, bringing the population of rhino on Lewa back down to 71 individuals. In a country where the population is slightly above 600 animals, these incidents are a devastating blow to conservation efforts and show the enormous pressure that these animals are under.

Rhinotek, an 11-year-old female rhino was found dead at mid-day on the 1st of December. The initial assessment did not give a clear indication of the cause of death but further veterinary examination established that the animal died from a bullet wound to the stomach. Nyota, a 20-year-old female and Serian, a seven-year-old male were shot dead at approximately 1:00 am, on the 2nd of December. Another carcass, later on identified as Jazz, a male rhino, was discovered mid-afternoon on the 2nd of December. Three of the rhino horn sets were intact and have since been recovered for safekeeping. The poachers managed to remove the other set of horns.

Many experts highlight that Africa’s rhinos are facing the worst poaching crisis in decades, with the most serious poaching upsurges in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Although population figures for both black and white rhinos have increased since 2007, because of the increase in poaching, there is still grave concern for the rhino’s future. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is not immune to this crisis and has lost 10 rhinos in the last three years.

“These incidents serve as a constant reminder of the harsh reality and rapidly escalating threat faced by rhinos. Lewa is now more than ever determined to counter these threats by increasing our security and monitoring efforts, reinforcing the important contribution that Lewa’s wildlife is making to local communities, and minimizing the risk posed to the remaining rhino population,” Mike Watson, Lewa’s CEO reaffirms the commitment towards rhino conservation, despite this most recent setback.

Getting to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

The critical mass of Lewa is worldwide.  It is a famous destination attracting a diversity of guests, the list of which includes no other than Prince William. From Nairobi, you can either fly or drive into Lewa.  A fly/drive arrangement is possible.  Two road options are available.  From Nairobi you can either drive as follows

Day 1: From Kilimanjaro to Kigali

On this day you are expected at the Kilimanjaro International Airport 2 hours prior to departure of your flight to Kigali.  If you are in one of our organized safaris in Northern Tanzania, we drive you from the park in the morning to arrive at Arusha at mid day where day rooms are organized for you to refreshing.  From Arusha we drive  you to the airport to catch your flight.   There are three departures from Kilimanjaro (JRO) to Kigali (KGL) all operated by Rwandair Express.  Flights departs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays as follows

Day3: Gorilla trekking Safari – Volcanoes national park Rwanda
An early morning breakfast is followed by a drive to Kinigi Park Headquarters for group allocation and briefing.  You must be arrive not later than 07:00 Hrs.  Depending on the group allocated tracking may take 2 hours minimum or even 7 hours .  Pack your picnic lunch  and enough water.  Carry at least 4 liters of water.   If you desire to track a particular group arrive earlier than all and make a formal request.  Do not hesitate to take a complimentary cup of Rwanda coffee served at the park headquarters.  After briefing get back to your vehicle and drive trail head. Sometimes you might walk from park headquarters depending on where your group is located.  Cars are left at the trail heads with your driver.  From trail heads hike up to the bamboo zone and search for gorilla signs.  Gorilla make their nests every night.  The moment you notice these, you should know the gorillas are near.  Follow the instructions of your guide. On sighting stay with gorillas for one hour and hike back to your cars.  Drive back to your hotel.  After lunch, tour the twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo.  Dinner and overnight at  La Palme at Ruhengeti (Budget), Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/ Gorilla Nest  (Mid Range or Sabyinyo Silver Back Lodge ( Luxury) 

Day4: Gorilla Tracking 2 At Volcanoes National Park

Breakfast and drive to park headquarters for guide allocation and briefing.  Your driver guide will make sure you arrive not later than 07:00 Hrs.  Just like previous day, you are briefed and driven to track another group of gorillas.  After the hike, return to your hotel for lunch. In the afternoon drive to Gisenyi on the shores of lake Kivu for overnight.  Overnight at Kivu Serena Hotel (Mid Range/ Luxury) or Malahide Paradise Hotel (Budget)

Day 5: Drive to Kigali
Breakfast and drive back to Kigali to catch your afternoon flight home.
